Simple Elegant Unique Fit and Flare Wedding Dress
Jenny Yoo for BHLDN Style #54683669

You will get SO many compliments on this amazing dress! Modern and unique yet it remains classic and timeless. Depending on how you accessorize it, the dress would be appropriate for everything from a relatively casual garden wedding to a formal affair. (It felt perfect for my wedding which was formal but not black tie.)

"With a fitted silhouette and chic halter neckline, this sleek gown is tailored for the modern bride. At the back, a versatile bow can be tied multiple ways to create a look all your own."

Alterations
I had it tailored at one of the best tailors in the NYC area, having gotten a recommendation from Bhldn. She is a true artist and did such a beautiful job!
Here are all the alterations:

  1. The dress didn’t come with bra cups, so she put foam bra cups in. They smooth everything out and make sure you can’t see any nipple. They are a standard size. You can’t see them through the dress.
  2. Added an American Bustle. It drapes beautifully. The button that holds up the bustle is located a couple of inches below where the dress stops being form-fitting and starts flaring out. You could have a tailor move the button up or down if you want the bustle higher or lower.
  3. She took enough length off the front of the dress so that the dress just touched the floor when I had my shoes on. (I am 5 foot 3.5 inches tall and I wore 2-inch heels. I wanted the front to be long enough to cover my shoes and *just* touch the floor while I was standing, but not long enough that I would trip over the dress while walking.)
  4. Took enough length off the back that it is a Chapel length train on someone my height. She also took a couple of inches off the sides of the train because I wanted the train to be a little less bulky and the amount of fabric to be manageable while I was walking and dancing with the dress bustled. Therefore the train is not a complete perfect circle but is a little bit more of an oval (see photos). I have seen photos of other people wearing the Shipley who got most of the train taken off – it looks super cute that way too, albeit a little more casual – but that’s another option for whoever buys this dress.
  5. The piece of fabric that came with the dress and that was meant to hold the two sides/straps of the upper back together, was (frankly) not very well made. It had only one hook-and-eye closure and felt like it was going to pop. My tailor used extra fabric from the alterations to make a more-secure closure to go around those back straps and hold them together. It is thicker, longer, and more secure than the original. It closes with a double hook-and-eye. It kept my chest perky without feeling too tight and made me feel confident that I wouldn’t have a wardrobe malfunction. This is a great feature of the dress that can allow you to adjust the sizing for yourself depending on your bust size – you could have a tailor make a looser or tighter piece. Another option is to use the long piece of fabric that comes with the dress to create a versatile bow that can be tied multiple ways to secure the top of the dress (you can find photos of it on the Bhldn website). I did not wear that bow (because I liked the look of the buttons down the backside and personally, didn’t want to cover that) but of course, it will be included with the dress and it would look elegant and pretty.

The tailor did not adjust anything else. The total cost for alterations was $500.

Condition
This particular dress is in phenomenal shape because I brought it to an excellent dry cleaner recommended by my tailor. You would never guess it’s been worn. I was looking in daylight for blemishes to point out in this listing but honestly couldn’t find any. If this becomes your dress, take it to a professional cleaner to have it steamed. The tailor warned me against trying to steam it myself in case steamer marks show up on the fabric. (I took it to a professional before my wedding.)

Styling
For shoes, I wore Loeffler Randall's Dahlia Pearl Pleated Bow Heel; and I wore the Bhldn Beauvoire Chapel Veil for the ceremony (both recommended by my Bhldn stylist). I chose an updo so as to not hide the neckline and the back, but hair down would look gorg too. I had bought Spanx that I had planned to wear but when I tried them on with the dress during the tailoring process, they were visible from the back because they came up too high on my natural waist. Perhaps there is low-rise shapewear out there that would work with this dress but I never found any so went without.
